Youth, Gender and Disability
Investigating the structural barriers facing women, youth, and persons with disabilities in accessing education, economic opportunity, and civic life.
This theme brings together CSR's research on gender equality, disability inclusion, and youth empowerment — three groups whose access to education, employment, and decision-making remains structurally constrained in Malawi. Research under this theme is deliberately intersectional, recognising that gender, age, and disability status frequently compound one another's effects.
Current and past work includes studies on girls' secondary-school retention, inclusive education programming for children with disabilities, women's practical land tenure security under customary systems, and the relationship between youth unemployment and political and civic participation in Malawi's towns and cities.
The theme is anchored in SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and reflects CSR's broader commitment to research that engages the people it is about — including boys and men as active participants in advancing gender equality, not merely women and girls as its subjects.
